Analysis of stress distributions under lightweight wheeled vehicles Report Title In recent years, the need for reliable modeling tools for lightweight robotic systems deployed on various terrains has spurred research efforts into development of vehicle terrain interaction (VTI) models. This paper presents an analysis of rigid wheels dry sand interaction and compares experimental results with predictions from established terramechanics theory. A novel experimental setup, based on sensing elements placed on the wheel surface, allows inference of normal and tangential stress at the wheel-terrain interface. A particle image velocimetry (PIV) analysis is used to study the soil kinematics under the wheel. The analysis of stress profiles shows that stress patterns under lightweight vehicle wheels conform reasonably well to established terramechanics theory developed for heavy vehicles. For the wheel under investigation, the stress distribution had minor variation along wheel width for low slip conditions. The wheel model proposed by Wong and Reece was analyzed in light of the stress and soil kinematics measurements available. It was found that, by appropriately characterizing the model coefficients $c_1$ and $c_2$, and understanding the physical meaning of the shear modulus $k_x$, it is possible to obtain torque, drawbar force, and sinkage predictions within 11\% (full scale error) of experimental data. 2

Thermally-induced loss of piezoelectricity in ferroelectric Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3–BaTiO3 Report Title The loss of piezoelectricity in ferroelectric sodium bismuth titanate (NBT) in solid solution with barium titanate ((1? x)NBT?xBT) is studied by means of thermal depoling and Raman spectroscopy. In the range 0?x?13%, the highest thermal stability of the piezoelectric coefficients is found in x=13%, fo...

Synthesis of nano-scale fast ion conducting cubic Li Report Title A solution-based process was investigated for synthesizing cubic Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO), which is known to exhibit the unprecedented combination of fast ionic conductivity, and stability in air and against Li. Sol–gel chemistry was developed to prepare solid metal–oxide networks consisting of 10 nm cross-links that formed the cubic ...

Separated Component-Based Restoration of Speckled SAR Images Report Title Many coherent imaging modalities such as Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) suffer from a multiplicative noise commonly referred to as speckle which often makes the interpretation of data difficult. An effective strategy for speckle reduction is to use a dictionary that can sparsely represent the features in the speckled imag...

Dynamic stabilization of an optomechanical oscillator Report Title Quantum optomechanics offers the potential to investigate quantum effects in macroscopic quantum systems in extremely well-controlled experiments. In this paper we discuss one such situation, the dynamic stabilization of a mechanical system such as an inverted pendulum. The specific example that we study is a “membrane-in-the-mi...
